The survey period was from July 18 to August 18, 2000. The instrument for the awareness and the performance level on the prevention of hospital infection developed by Sook-hee Chun was used and revised for this study. The data were analyzed by the SAS program using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe, Pearson¡¯s correlation analysis and Stepwise multiple regression.

Results : The study results are as follows:
1. The total score for the awareness on the prevention of hospital infection was 4.65. Among subsections, the highest score of 4.75 was in handwashing and the lowest score of 4.46 was in Foley¡¯s catheter management.
2. The total score for the performance level on the prevention of hospital infection was 3.98. Among subsections, the highest score of 4.26 was in handwashing and the lowest score of 3.61 was in Foley¡¯s catheter management.
3. In the relationship between the general characteristics the performance level were significantly different in clinical careers(F=3.77, p<0.01).
4. The pearson¡¯s correlation between the awareness and performance levels was significant(r=0.45, p<0.01).
5. The main factor influencing on the performance level was the awareness level(20.2%).

Conclusions : The result for thist study showed that the level of performance for the prevention of hospital infection of the intensive care unit nurses was lower than the level of awareness. Therefore, it would be needed continuous educational program for improve the level of performance.
